Part 1: What is AirDrop and how does it Work?

Prior to the release of AirDrop, Mac users transferred files from one Mac to the other using email or external drives. Users had to rely upon third-party software such as Dropbox and iCloud to transfer files from iPhone to the Mac. With the inclusion of AirDrop in Mac and iPhone, the hassle of file transfer has become obsolete. Using the application, you can seamlessly transfer files for iPhone to iPhone, iPhone to Mac, and iPhone to iPad and vice versa.

Using the Bluetooth of the device, AirDrop establishes a peer-to-peer Wi-Fi connection between two devices. Both the connected devices create a firewall and files are encrypted before transferring. This makes file transfer with AirDrop not only convenient but also secure. Transferring files using email exposes the sensitive data to potential exploitation. Therefore, it is best to use this method of transfer compared to message or any other method. The new iOS 12 and macOS Mojave also include the new file system APFS which is designed to facilitate high-level encryption. The new file system adds to the encryption capability of AirDrop.

AirDrop detects any device that is in close proximity and establishes a connection. You can then use AirDrop to share files, photos, videos between iOS devices. When it comes to file transfer, AirDrop is superior to any other application that provides file sharing capability. AirDrop uses the Wi-Fi of the device to transfer files while other applications use Bluetooth. Many Android device uses Near Field Communication with a combination of Bluetooth, but they are all slow compared to transferring files using the Wi-Fi.
